§ 05 · THE STUDIO

Three floors. Sprung wood, mirror, no carpet.

We're in a renovated 1923 warehouse in Old Fourth Ward — 14-foot ceilings, three studios across two floors, all with proper sprung wood floors (sub-floor framing for impact absorption — not the same as wood-on-concrete you'll find at most studios). Mirrors floor-to-ceiling on the long walls, ballet barres in two of the three, sound systems we actually paid for. Locker rooms with hot showers; a small lobby with coffee. Open 7am — 10pm, 7 days a week.

Years on Glen Irissince 2018

Salt & Swing was opened in October 2018 by Mira Ito-Vlk, after she retired from the Atlanta Ballet at 32 with knees that "could no longer take it" but a body that could still teach. We started in a single 1,200-sq-ft room with two teachers, eleven students, and a sound system that nobody was sure had ever been switched on. Six months in, we had moved upstairs into the bigger space; eighteen months in, we had taken over the second floor too.

What we are now, seven years on, is three studios across two floors, eight teachers (all of them currently performing or competing elsewhere), 62 classes a week across twelve genres, and roughly 840 active members. We are not a chain. We are not franchising. We will never put you on a platform-based "credit system."

What we believe is that moving your body, with other bodies, in a room with mirrors and music, is one of the four or five best things a person can do — and that the chance to do it should be cheap, friendly, and absolutely available to anyone who walks through the door. If you can't pay the listed price, ask us about the sliding scale. If you have never danced before in your life, especially come. Your first class is free, every time.
