Sea, salt & sunlight

A small surf company on the California coast. Hand-shaped boards, salt-rinsed apparel, and a coffee window at the outpost on Highway One. We've been doing this since 2011, mostly the same way.

Four boards we keep making. that's it.

Every board is hand-shaped by our shaper Mateo in the back room of the outpost. Polyurethane core, hand-laid glass, hand-finished sanding. No factories, no overseas blanks, no rush. Twelve to sixteen weeks for a custom; what's on the rack ships in 48 hours.

Mateo shapes every board.
all of them.

Mateo Carrillo has been shaping surfboards for twenty-seven years, first in Encinitas under Bill Stewart, then for Hayden Shapes, then on his own from a one-car garage in Daly City, and finally — since 2014 — in our back room on Highway One. He shapes about three hundred boards a year.

That means every board you order from us is shaped by the same person, on the same blank, with the same hand-tools, in a room with the same Sticky Fingers tape Mateo has been playing while he works since roughly 1998.

"Boards have weight when they're made by hand. You can't feel it on the rack — you can only feel it in the water." — Mateo, after board number twelve hundred

04 — The outpost

A small shop on Highway One. come by.

Our outpost sits on a curve of Highway One, just south of Linda Mar, in a one-story 1960s building that used to be a bait shop. Inside is the showroom: about thirty boards on the rack, the apparel wall, and a coffee window that pours from 7am to 11am every morning.

The back room is the shaping bay where Mateo works. If he's not in the bay, he's probably out the water — and if you wave at the back door, he'll usually come around to talk boards.

We've never been on Google Maps' first page of "surf shops near me" and we are okay with that.

05 — From the journal

What we've been writing about lately.

A small journal we run out of the outpost — surf reports, gear reviews, conservation notes from the local Surfrider chapter, and the occasional recipe from the coffee window. Updated every couple of weeks.

Why we don't use EPS blanks

A thousand words on the difference between PU and EPS construction — and why, even though the EPS guys are right about weight and environment, our boards still come off the rack as polyurethane.

Pacifica in November

Linda Mar has had a quietly excellent stretch — eight days of clean, consistent, head-high swell, with offshores most mornings until 9 or 10am. Our log of what we caught and what we missed.
